Unlike bamboo, which is hollow, rattan is a solid timber vine that grows in the jungles of Indonesia. Rattan grows in a long slender stem, which maintains an almost uniform diameter throughout its length. It grows in a manner similar to a vine, but has an inner core and is not hollow like bamboo. The shade in the rain forests is very dense and climbing on tree limbs is the most practical way for the rattan vines to reach the light above the forest canopy. The outer portion of the stem is extremely hard and durable, while the inner portion of the stem is softer and somewhat porous. There is no harvesting season for rattan, it grows year round. Harvesting can be difficult due to the landscape and inaccessibility of the jungle. The diameter and length of the rattan according to the specie of rattan can be as long as 600 feet, however they are cut into 12-15 lengths and tied into large bundles to make the journey from jungle to processing area. Rattan, originates from South East Asia from indonesia, Laos, Cambodia and Phillipines. The rattan is placed in a steam box which is necessary for bending the rattan and making it more pliable. Jigs are constructed for producing specific shapes. When the rattan is steaming hot, it is bent to fit into the jig. Once cooled, the rattan will remain in that shape. The shaped poles are assembled with straight poles that are contoured to fit joints evenly. Our furniture is constructed only with quality hardware. The joints where the two pieces meet are wrapped cheifly with peel / wicker / leather bindings. Once the furniture is complete, combinations of latex and alcohol base stains are used to obtain a homogeneous finish. Painstaking detail is used to prepare and sand each piece for a clean, smooth surface. Maintenance & Cleaning Maintenance of your cane furniture is fairly easy. You can just wipe it with a dry cloth to keep it in the best condition. Only use a slightly damp cloth to remove spillages. If your furniture is really dirty you may find it beneficiary to hose it down, but make sure you dry your furniture properly! Check with the manufacturer if this method is suitable for your furniture. The cushions of cane furniture, if used in conservatories, can be susceptible to fading. Turning the cushions regularly and having blinds put up in your conservatory will help slowing down the fading process. Also, make sure that when you buy your conservatory furniture, you will be able to wash or dry-clean the cushion covers. Something else that can occur with any woven furniture is that the seating or the backing can damage. If the seating of your chair is damaged, you can take it to a cane repair shop. It is much cheaper to repair it than to buy a new chair! Just look in the yellow pages under 'cane furniture repair' or 'wicker repair'. Also have a look online as you may find someone there that can do the work for you. Do not allow your furniture to be exposed to harsh Ultraviolet sunlight for prolonged periods of time, as this can affect the colour. Turn the cushions periodically. Gently wipe over the frames with a moist, clean cloth to remove dust or spills and vacuum the woven parts with a soft brush attachment. For major liquid spills, remove all upholstery, hose the water hyacinth furniture and place outside or in a drying room to dry. Please note that it is important that the furniture is dried and not remain wet or damp for any length of time as this will result in mould and subsequent deterioration of the water hyacinth furniture. Water hyacinth is a natural untreated handmade product and will absorb moisture and dry out in direct relation to climate conditions. To avoid any deterioration it is recommended that the environment be dry and well ventilated. www.Furniture-Rattan.com
